Summer – for most people certainly the nicest time of the year. Anyway, many wearers of medical compression stockings look at the hot season with mixed feelings: the consistent wearing of compression stockings is important for the therapeutic success, also when it’s warm. You can read in the following, what affected people can do in summer, to enjoy the nicest season of the year, despite vein or edema diseases.


Why do the complaints increase in summer?

The blood circulation of the body is better in the warm season than in winter. This may sound good at first, but at the same time more blood is being pumped into the congested area (for example the varicose vein), which intensifies the symptoms. Additionally the veins expand when it is warm und the backflow of the blood is being disturbed further on. Also lymph- or lipedema patients know: the symptoms are increasing when it is hot. The edema grows – and along with that also the symptoms do.


What can affected patients do?

In order not to jeopardize the success of the treatment despite of midsummer temperatures, it is important to wear medical compression daily, also in the summer months. The following tips can help to come better through the hot season:


Enjoy sun in moderation

For vein and edema patients skin protection is particularly important. Therefore the skin should be protected from too much solar radiation. Above all it is important to prefer shaded places or cover the affected body areas at noon, when the sun is at its highest.

Arrange for cooling

There are various possibilities how patients can cool down in summer. Whereas many create cooling by evaporation by moistening their compression stockings with a spray bottle, others count on putting the stockings into a freezer right before wearing. For some patients it can be pleasant to put on the stockings in a slightly moist state.

But beware: too much moisture can damage the skin. Affected people should take care that the skin does not soften or gets sore (technical term: maceration). Then the risk of infection increases because open areas are entrances for germs. Therefore the skin should constantly be observed.

A cooling gel (e.g. menthol gel) can bring the desired freshness boost after taking off the stockings in the evening. By storing moisturizing cream in the refrigerator you can get a welcome cool down when applying. Alternating hot and cold showers, paddling and cold affusions help the vein walls to contract.

Adequate fluid intake

Especially in summer, vein and edema patients should drink enough – at least two liters a day. Not only the backflow of the blood is supported by that, but also the whole body is supplied better with moisture, which increases the physical comfort. Water, herbal tea or fruit juice drinks are most suitable as summerly thirst quenchers.


Gentle sports, that don’t overheat the body (like swimming, Nordic walking, walking or biking) knock the calf muscle pump in shape. The blood flow is supported by such kinds of sports or special gymnastic exercises and the lymphatic system is stimulated.

Wear breathable clothes

Affected people should take care not to impair the lymph flow or rather the backflow of the blood by tight clothes that are cutting in the skin. Especially in summer light and airy clothes are comfortable because the heat can’t dam. Also for the medical compression treatment you can choose from airy and temperature-compensating materials like e.g. Lastofa Forte with merino wool. This moisture-regulating natural fiber lets the skin breath and counteracts odour formation in a natural way.

Treat yourself and your legs to relaxation

After a hot summer day it helps to put the legs up. This relieves the vein and lymphatic system and provides relaxation to heavy, swollen and hurting legs.
